News
On September 6, 2024, on the Day of the Reunification, the 10th edition of the Ekiden (relay) marathon will be held in Sofia, with the support of Euroins. The event is organized by the Youth Sports Club "Sofia – Europe," with the assistance of the "Sofia – European Capital of Sports" Foundation and under the patronage of the Japanese Ambassador to Bulgaria.
The start and finish of the marathon will be at the National Stadium "Vasil Levski" at the intersection of Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi Blvd. and Gurko St. The competition is a relay race, with each team consisting of 6 participants across 6 categories, covering the classic distance of 42.195 km.
The "Sofia Ekiden Marathon" is held to promote relay road running in Bulgaria. The event is officially included in the celebration of the 35th Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria. The marathon is called "Ekiden" from the Japanese characters "eki" – station, and "den" – transmission, and supports team spirit and competition. Relay marathons are highly emotional and are among the most popular races in the world of athletics. In various countries, these races have different names, but the organizers of the Bulgarian event prefer the classic "Ekiden" as a mark of respect for Japanese tradition. The first relay marathon was indeed held in Japan.
